increased lacrimation
Other names: hyperlakrimace, epiphora
Increased lacrimation, or epiphora or lacrimation is one of the basic symptoms in ophthalmology.Epiphora is accompanied by a number of diseases of the eye and its surroundings. There are basically two main principles excessive lacrimation: lacrimation and obstukce lacrimal ducts.
Excessive tearing occurs when irritation of the trigeminal nerve (the nerve trigeminus- fifth cranial nerve). It can irritate especially inflammation – is therefore essential epiphora symptoms of inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva, but also other eye structures.
Excessive tearing eye can be affected by conjunctivitis – conjunctivitis – inflammation of these are numerous, but the symptoms have in common: epiphora, eyelid edema, conjunctival redness and leakage, pain in bacterial infections too painful swelling of the parotid glands, etc.
Hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis: this disease is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Neisseria meningitis. After contacting bacteria conjunctiva occurs within hours to develop plank eyelid edema, redness and conjunctival effusion and producing thick purulent fluid. Nodes are swollen and very painful. This disease requires medical attention in the form of administration of penicillin, because it may cause corneal ulceration and severe impairment of visual function.
Acute bacterial conjunctivitis: is caused by a variety of bacteria, has symptoms similar to the previous unit, however, these symptoms are milder.
Furthermore, there are many other conjunctival inflammation: viral – adenoviral conjunctivitis, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, also these are allergy etc.
Corneal inflammation also an important group of causes excessive tearing. To it is added to the feeling of a foreign body in the eye, much soreness or a feeling of pressure, highlight blood vessels, sometimes reflexive closure fissure – blepharospasm. Corneal inflammation may be associated with a number of complications, so the patient should see a doctor.
Similarly, it is also inflammation in the sclera – scleritis and episcleritis. Symptoms are burning, highlighting vessels, photophobia, epiphora like.
Increased lacrimation observed even in acute glaucoma (glaucoma), which puts patients at risk irreversible damage to the optic nerve. The symptoms are very distinctive: pain in one eye, which affects up to half of the head – these pains are cruel, accesses significantly impaired vision etc.
Lacrimal duct obstruction is an accumulation of tears before closure. Typical is a strong tearing the cold and wind, less in the warm room.
The eye is a very important and very sensitive organ, so one should at hint of his handicap consult an ophthalmologist if there are other symptoms such as pain, redness, swelling, probably it will be the inflammation that is necessary (especially in bacteria, chlamydia and protozoa) well healed, otherwise you may encounter komplikace- corneal ulcer etc.
