Mammary gland produces milk after birth due to hormones. Even beyond the suckling period, however, may occur in a woman discharge from the nipples, that may not be indicative of any disease, but it is good to always consult a gynecologist.
Sided milk spout off the suckling period (ie without birth or at intervals of six months of breastfeeding) is called galactorrhea. The most common causes are certain medications such as birth control.
The cause, however, also can be high levels of the hormone prolactin, and should therefore determine its value in the blood. Prolactin is released into the blood from the pituitary (hypophysis) in which can form benign tumors, which uncontrolled produce hormones.
Another cause of galactorrhea may be thyroid disorders, chronic renal failure, or to detect the cause.
A special form is the neonatal galactorrhoea, which occurs in newborn due to stimulation of the mother’s gland hormones. Galactorrhoea may also occur around the time of menopause due to hormonal changes.
If the discharge from the breast on one side, and especially if it is a brown or red blood, it is advisable to seek a doctor immediately to rule out breast cancer.
