Eye pain can be caused by eye injuries, infections (mostly conjunctiva, cornea, lacrimal gland, or – stye), clogging dust and other particles into the eye, allergic inflammation, increased intraocular pressure, certain rare eye cancer. Pain can be of different nature – stabbing, sharp, dull, burning, or itching. Try to eye rinse orprokapat boric water (if you have it at home in the refrigerator, look first at the expiration date!) If it does not work and you have besides pain other symptoms – red-eye, swollen eyelids and the like. Rather go see your doctor. Infectious inflammation prescribe antibiotics in the form of drops or ointment, which the eye gently massaged regularly. On the allergic inflammation manifested primarily itching is suitable antazoline, azelastine, emedastine and other drugs.
The use of steroids is reserved for acute cases when they do not take other anti-inflammatory drugs, and frequent side-effects can only be short term.
