Colon

After the small intestine comes the colon. Guts I separated by a valve which prevents the reflux of chyme. The large intestine is much shorter than the small intestine, is about 1.5 meters.

Colon

Part of the large intestine are called: the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid loop, then there is an appendix (cecum)and the last part of the anus (rectum). Nor should we forget wormlike projection – appendix.

Colon function

The most important function of the colon is absorption of water and electrolytes and the “storage” digesta and stool formation. Given that there has stopped so intense absorption of nutrients, missing a typical large intestine folds and villi. And bowel movements are slower.

The movements performed by the large intestine, are mixing and peristaltic. Mixing movements are secured by the current contraction of circular and longitudinal muscle. Here it is important to get the digesta into contact with the intestinal wall. Peristaltic movements move chyme toward the rectum and must be a contraction for chyme and permits a beat before chyme. Digesta remains in the colon up to 15 hours.

The large intestine is typical in that it is colonized by intestinal bacteria, which are anaerobic – can live without air. These bacteria are harmless to the body and helps cleave dietary fiber, a source of vitamin K, also generate intestinal gases and lower the pH. It is important to maintain the intestinal microflora in shape to prevent the overgrowth of pathological bacteria, as well as an overgrowth of yeast and fungi.

Bowel disease

As with the small intestine is often punished colon inflammation, these may be infectious or non-specific as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, colitis originator may also be drug – NSAIDs, antibiotics.

Colon especially in elderly people are often affected diverticulosis, intestinal pouches, which may become infected. Likewise no exception various kinds of polyps of protruding into the lumen of the intestine that may lead to intestinal obstruction. Serious are then cancerous growths.
